As a member of your school alumni association, you have been invited to present a paper and talk titled ‘The Benefits of Speaking Effectively in English' to a group of school leavers. The paper will be distributed to the audience before your talk. Do the following to prepare for the presentation:

1. Write the paper using these headings/sub-headings and notes below as well as others that you may decide to use. Content given is suggested only; you may add your own ideas where appropriate.

• Introduction – importance of English as the official second language, need for speech training in English, purpose of paper: benefits of speaking effectively

• Oral communication in English and personal development: interpersonal, group and public speaking skills contribute to language proficiency, help develop bilingual competence, increase self-confidence and self-worth, etc.

• Effective speech performance in public: participate in conversation, dialogue, public forums, etc.; be able to speak for yourself and for others on issues of public importance, ask relevant questions, provide appropriate responses and informed viewpoints, etc.

• Good speaking abilities important for better job/career prospects: research shows link between speaking ability and career mobility, better job interview performance, effective/productive use of spoken English at the workplace, etc.

• Summary of the paper: restate benefits of speaking effectively in English; concluding remarks

2. Prepare 10 -12 MS PowerPoint slides based on the content of your paper for a 10 minute talk. Use phrases rather than whole sentences to write the text of your slides. Use numbered/bulleted lists to organise and present main/supporting ideas on a given slide. Make your slides visually interesting by using suitable colours for the background and embedded symbols and pictures as appropriate.

1.0 Introduction

English is the most important language in this world. The reason why this language are important is English is one of the most spoken languages in the world. The first one is Mandarin. Some say English is the second one and others say it's Hindi or Spanish. Nevertheless, Mandarin, Hindi and Spanish are concentrated in their respective countries, and English is more extended. There are many reason why English become the most important language in the world, among that is because of education, jobs and business.

According to Dutta (2010), The importance of learning English cannot be overstated in an increasingly interconnected and globalized world. For the millions of immigrants that come to the United States from non-English-speaking countries every year, learning to communicate in English is important to enter and ultimately succeed in mainstream America. Working knowledge of the English language can create many opportunities in international markets and regions.


2.0 Literature review

The most important benefit of speaking English is because education. According to Baird (2010), The English language is the predominant language of academics all over the world, with a large amount of research conducted, written and presented in English. Knowing English can helpful for scholars who wish to communicate their ideas and research findings to peers in their field.

English also important for us to get a good job which a lot of employer are keen to hire someone can speak in English. According to Romano (2010), in addition to job opportunities, there are other opportunities available for those who learn English. Learning English can improve the chances of being accepted into advanced training programs or colleges in English-speaking countries. Learning English also can expand the ability to access news and information, much of which is generated only in English.

In other hand benefits of speaking effectively english is because english is a business language. Peiperl (n.d) believe we can argue about the merits of the situation, but English already is the language of international commerce. This is not likely to change any time soon. The situation may not be optimal, especially if English is not your strongest language. I admit to having been astonishingly lucky in


3.0 Finding

3.1 Education
Among the benefits of English in education is to enable students to master the subject matter is mostly derived the English language. As we know most of the books and information resources in science and technology are written in English, therefore a good command of English will help us to better understand the subject. Since some important subjects such as science, mathematics, information technology and others using the English language in Malaysia, then the failure of students to master this language will undermine students' mastery of the subjects mentioned above.

English is very important in education be with the objectives of education to produce individuals capable of competing in a global world. Mastery of English, started from the school to produce individuals who can communicate effectively with others from around the world.

The other benefit for student can speak effectively in English they will get good result and will have an opportunity to study abroad. With their language proficiency they will able to compete with student all over the world.


Tichenor (n.d) believe the reasons for students to learn languages are many, and not just because you need it to graduate or get a certain degree. Obviously, improving English skills and overall communication skills are both valuable to students. Improvement of memory, creativity, problem solving ability and analytical skills also are of significant importance to a student. Studies show that bilinguals routinely outperform monolinguals in all areas of testing. Scores for SATs and other tests are shown to be higher for foreign language students, and the longer the foreign language study the higher the average test scores. Having second language skills also makes a student more competitive in the job market.

3.2 Job
In order to get a good job, English play important role. Keep in mind that employers are more interested in hiring employee that can communicate in various languages, especially English. For example, jobs in telecommunication, information technology, broadcasting, service desk and other are requiring speaks an effectively English. Moreover, those skilled in English favored the employers of large companies usually offer more lucrative income. Obviously, English is very important to learn in school to benefit students for career building in the future.
Some businesses that deal with international clients and suppliers rely on English-speaking employees to help with day-to-day operations to interpret, translate and communicate directly with English-speaking customers and clients. Being fluent in English can improve employment opportunities. Romano (2010)

With the economic progress of countries that have surpassed national boundaries and penetrated global, has led Malaysia needs people that can speak English well in order to compete with other countries around the world. English education is very important to create a society that can communicate with the international community. This is to facilitate the sharing of information in various fields such as economics, technology, social, and so on. Generally, those who fail to master this language will be faced with many obstacles that can interfere with communication, and can thwart the opportunities available at international level. Therefore, English education in schools serves to build a more competitive society on a global level one day.

3.3 Business
In addition, English is the main language of business. Widespread usage is due to globalization on the world stage. According to Tichenor (n.d) Learning a language for business is a very common reason. The business opportunities that have arisen in the last few decades have made it almost imperative for a businessperson to have language skills. English may be spoken by many people and it is the language of the internet, but in order to really cultivate business relationships and get ahead in the business world, language skills are a must. There are a wide variety of industries in which having language ability is a great advantage. It broadens our job skills and career options.

When a French buyer, Japanese supplier and Mexican manufacturer meet in Hong Kong for a trade show, they talk in the language of international commerce: English. You need to learn that language if you want to do business with a country outside of your own. In many parts of the world, such as the U.S., you cannot get a job unless you speak English at native levels. Some professions, such as airline pilot, require the language no matter the country of origin. Learning English can thus provide you with a job advantage over non-English speakers. Locsin (n.d)

Although the country's official language is Bahasa Malaysia but in business language is English are frequently used. According to studies, language of Malaysia is rarely used in business carried out. This occurs because of the lack term in Bahasa Malaysia to disclose the purpose of the business. English proficiency is important to ensure opportunities for success in business. If English is not controlled, then the individual businesses, companies and countries will be limited. When the opportunity is limited, this does not only affect the national economy but also affect diplomatic relations and the good name of the country. Thus, English is very important in business.


4.0 Conclusion

English is the language that is to be learned and mastered by all students. A person who can master this language will be more confident and able to seize the opportunities available either at national or international level.

So obvious is that the English speaking effectively is a critical need for individuals who want to succeed. we also have to acknowledge the need speaking English effectively be a starting point for our country progress
